Rie Munoz (1921-2015) painted and sketched people and scenes from around her home state of Alaska, her full body of work numbering around 2,000 paintings and 140 sketchbooks. In her Juneau Empire obituary, her daughter-in-law, Rep. Cathy Munoz said "She loved people, and it showed in her work: Alaskans doing Alaska-type things, fisherman working, children at play, village life, legends and dogs. Rie once said she never met a dog she didn't like." Anchorage artist and art dealer Jean Shadrach recalled the first time she saw Munoz's paintings on display at the Anchorage Museum. "Everybody was looking at her paintings and smiling. Her art makes you feel good to look at it. There's something about her sense of humor that just comes through."
